Hold a valid open driver licence from Australia or NZ, held continuously for at least 1 year before applying.

Pass traffic, medical and criminal history checks.

Hold a Positive Blue Notice (Blue Card) for child-related employment.

Have completed Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics, Road Transport - Car Driving Instruction (TLI41222 or TLI41216).

You'll need to complete an approved training course through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by Transport and Main Roads.
The Certificate IV program is a combination of online modules with in-car assessments. The average time to complete the course is 4 to 8 weeks.

Application lodgement and pre-checks
You can pre-lodge your application without course certification so the criminal and traffic history checks can start. You must present course certification within 3 months of lodging, or your application will lapse.

Approval and accreditation
Once the chief executive has made the decision to grant the accreditation, you may be issued with an interim industry authority. This interim authority acts as proof that you hold a driver trainer industry authority until your card arrives in the mail.
Accreditation as a driver trainer is granted for 12 months. You'll need to renew your accreditation before it expires.
