Converting your international licence to an Australian licence
International driver’s licence holders are generally able to drive on Australian roads for a period of time. Your visa or residency status determines how long you can use your international licence and whether you need to convert. The rules and conversion processes are different in each state of Australia.
Have your documents and ID ready
Your overseas licence (with a translation if not in English), proof of Australian permanent residency, and two ID documents required by your state government.
Pass an eyesight test
All drivers must meet eyesight standards for driving. Even if you have previous experience driving overseas, you'll be required to undergo an eyesight test to prove that you meet the Australian standards.
Complete a medical test (if required)
If you have a medical condition that may impact your ability to drive, you may be required to complete a medical test to assess your fitness to drive.
Pass a knowledge test
You may be required to pass your state's road rules knowledge test — names vary (Driver Knowledge Test in NSW, Learner Permit Knowledge Test in VIC, RRKT in ACT, and equivalents in QLD, WA, SA and TAS). The window to convert before this becomes part of regaining your learner permit varies by state too, typically 3 to 6 months. Free state-specific practice tests are available.
Pass a driving test
You may be required to pass a driving test. If you don't convert your licence within the time window, this becomes part of regaining your provisional licence. Driving test packages available.
Pay the relevant licence fees
As part of the conversion process you'll be required to pay relevant administrative fees each time you take a test or submit an application.
Important to know
Under the Commonwealth Migration Act 1958, you're no longer considered a visitor once you become a permanent resident. From that point you have a fixed window to convert your overseas licence — typically 3 months in NSW and 6 months in VIC. Miss the window and you'll need to start fresh through the local graduated licensing scheme.
State requirements differ in the detail. Victoria, for example, also requires you to pass a hazard perception test as part of the conversion. Specific document requirements vary too — always confirm with your local licensing authority.

Frequently asked questions
How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost?
At EzLicence, we have set driving lesson prices based on our extensive research of driving schools across Australia. Prices can vary depending on the suburb where you will be picked up and your preferred transmission type (automatic or manual). Enter the information into our search tool to compare driving lesson prices.
Note that we offer discounts for learner drivers who purchase driving lesson packages.
Do You Offer Any Special Lessons to Prepare for the Driving Test?
EzLicence offers a driving test package for $225, which includes:
• Pick-up from your chosen location
• 45-minute pre-test driving lesson
• Use of your instructor’s vehicle for the driving test
• Drop off to your chosen location
The EzLicence Test Package is available to all customers except those in ACT, SA or TAS. Some EzLicence instructors require you book a lesson with them prior to booking a Test Package. Others will offer this as a standalone item. Find an instructor for a Test Package here.
How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need?
After your first lesson, your driving instructor will be in the best position to assess how many driving lessons you should take, based on factors such as:
• Previous driving experience, if any
• Confidence level
• How quickly you appear to learn and master driving techniques
A New Driver
If you have no driving experience at all, we recommend at least 7 to 10 hours of driving lessons with an accredited driving instructor. For less confident learners, it’s not unusual to book up to 20 hours of instruction. We all learn at different speeds, and it is important to make sure you have a handle on what you’ve been taught in your driving lessons, not just for your driver’s test, but to be a safe and competent driver.
If you are a new driver but have had some driving experience – say, with a family member or friend – we recommend at least 5 to 7 hours of driving instruction to fine-tune your skills and prepare for your driving test.
International Driver’s Licence Holders
Most international driver’s licence holders book about 2 to 3 hours of driving instruction to prepare for the driver’s test here. Notably, there has been a high failure rate in this category, so we recommend starting with at least 3 to 5 hours of driving lessons before attempting the driving test.
Licenced wanting to learn how to drive a manual car
Most learners who already hold an Australian Driver's Licence, but wish to learn on a manual vehicle, will require 3 to 5 hours of driving lessons.
Please note that these ranges are a guide only and will vary from learner to learner.
Can I get the bonus logbook hours if I take lessons from an EzLicence Driving Instructor?
Definitely.
Taking structured driving lessons with an EzLicence instructor in NSW, QLD & ACT lets you record 3 hours of driving experience in your logbook for every 1 hour of driving instruction, up to a maximum of 30 hours recorded for 10 hours of lessons. You can, of course, continue to take driving lessons with EzLicence instructors after you have recorded the maximum allowable bonus, but each 1 hour will equal 1 hour in your logbook.
Note that if you take a driving lesson at night (i.e. between sunset and sunrise), you can only record 1 hour of night driving. The remaining 2 hours are added to your log of day driving experience hours.
In Tasmania, you’ll get 1 extra hour of credit for every hour of driving instruction, up to a maximum of 20 hours recorded for 10 hours of lessons.
What if There Are No Available Driving Instructors in My Area?
If your search comes up with no results, it is because there are no driving instructors who are currently willing or able to service the area of your chosen pick-up location. Simply enter an alternate location that is convenient for you and search again.
Can I Take Refresher Driving Lessons?
Of course! Many existing driver’s licence holders book driving lessons to refresh their skills or build up some more confidence, especially if they have spent some time not driving. We recommend about 3 to 5 hours of driving instruction in cases like this.
Can I Change Instructors?
Absolutely. At EzLicence, we know that having a rapport with your driving instructor makes for a more comfortable – and therefore effective – learning experience. If you want to book a lesson with another driving instructor, just follow the same steps. From your dashboard select 'find another instructor' and then choose the instructor you'd like. Check their availability and book online. Take your driving lesson. It's that simple.
